When you start homesteading later in life, the tools matter more. The young folks can haul feed bags and kneel in the dirt all afternoon. We need to be smarter about it, because a sore back on Saturday means nothing gets done on Sunday.

These are the tools on our list as we get the pasture and future garden ready. We're buying them a few at a time as the budget allows.

A garden kneeler that flips into a seat

Kneel on the padded side to weed, flip it over to sit. The side handles help you get up and down, which is the part nobody talks about.

A rolling garden cart

Anything with wheels is a friend. A cart with a seat lets you roll along a row instead of bending over it, and a wagon with big tires carries soil, mulch, and feed across bumpy ground.

Long-handled tools

Long-handled weeders, cultivators, and bulb planters let you work standing up. Look for handles that reach at least your hip so you aren't still hunching.

Ergonomic hand tools

Thick, cushioned handles and angled grips put less strain on wrists and hands. They're worth it if you have any stiffness or arthritis.

A good wheelbarrow

A two-wheel wheelbarrow is more stable than the classic one-wheel kind, so you spend less effort keeping it balanced. Worth considering for anyone moving heavy loads across a pasture.

What to look for

  • Lightweight materials like aluminum or fiberglass handles
  • Padded grips and adjustable heights
  • Wheels wherever possible
  • Good reviews from people who mention back or knee problems

Work smarter, not harder. Our backs said please.
