A kitchen renovation is not in our budget. A few good pieces on the counter? That we can do. The trick to a farmhouse kitchen on a budget is choosing things that are useful every day and look good left out, so the decor does double duty.
What makes a kitchen feel farmhouse
It comes down to three things: natural materials like wood, glass, and stoneware; warm, soft colors; and things that look handmade or well used. You don't need all of it. Two or three of these pieces grouped together on one stretch of counter make a big difference.
The list
- Glass canisters with wood lids. Flour, sugar, and coffee look better in glass, and you can see when you're running low.
- A wood cutting board you leave out. Prop a big one against the backsplash and it becomes art.
- A wire egg basket. Our future chickens don't exist yet, but the basket works great for store-bought eggs, onions, or potatoes.
- A ceramic utensil crock. Clears a drawer and adds a farmhouse look next to the stove.
- Linen or cotton tea towels. The cheapest way to add color and texture. Swap them with the seasons.
- A wood or marble trivet. Useful, and it looks nice sitting under a pot of herbs.
- A small potted herb or two. Basil or rosemary on the windowsill is decor you can eat.
- A stoneware fruit bowl. A bowl of lemons or apples is the oldest decorating trick there is.
- A washable kitchen runner. Washable is the key word if your house has mud, dogs, or both.
- Simple open shelf brackets. One short shelf for plates and jars instantly changes the room.
How to shop on a budget
Pick one finish and stick to it, like warm wood with black metal or wood with brass. Buy one or two pieces at a time and live with them before adding more. Most of these come in under $50 if you shop around, and many come in well under that.
