There is nothing like sitting on the porch at the end of the day, looking out at a pasture that's going to be something someday. In the South, the porch is a room of its own, and ours deserves a little love.
Start with seating
Rocking chairs are the classic for a reason. A pair of them with a small side table between is the whole recipe. If rockers are out of budget, any weather-resistant chair with a cushion works.
Add softness
Outdoor pillows and a throw make hard chairs feel like living room furniture. Choose outdoor-rated fabric so they survive humidity and the occasional pop-up storm.
Light it up
Solar lanterns and string lights cost nothing to run and make evenings feel magical. Cluster lanterns of different heights near the steps for a welcoming glow.
Bring in plants
Two large planters flanking the door make a porch look finished. Pick tough plants that can handle Georgia heat, like ferns in the shade or lantana in the sun. Big pots dry out slower than small ones, which means less watering.
Ground it with a rug
An outdoor rug defines the seating area and hides worn porch boards. Polypropylene rugs can be hosed off, which is helpful when muddy boots are involved.
Change it with the seasons
Keep the big pieces neutral and change the small things: pumpkins in fall, greenery in winter, flowers in spring. That way you're only buying a few small items each season.
